I have the honour to address you on the measures which have been taken in this Colony to provide a permanent local Memorial to His late Majesty King George the Fifth. I regret that you should not have been furnished with a report on this matter at an earler date but, since the scheme adopted in Hong Kong is in essentials the same as that referred to in yor circular despatches of the 12th August, 1936, and the 15th October, 1937, as having been approved in the United Kingdom under the title of King George's Fields, I venture to trust that it will meet with your
approval.
2. The Hong Kong sche..e was inaugurated by Sir Andrew Caldecott after it had been carefully considered and approved by the Executive Council. Its objects and scope were fully set out in an appeal for funds issued to the public in October, 1936, a copy of which is enclosed here- with for your information.

Subscription lists were opened and there was immediate response from all sections of the community. It was originally intended that these lists should be closed by the end of 1936 but as a result of representations made by many leading Chinese it was eventually decided to
leave them open until the 15th Jane, 1937. The total
subscribed by this cate amounted to slightly over
$153,000.00, a figure which must be regarded as very
